In Memoriam
Craig Scott Simon (April 23, 1953 to August 10, 2024)

Craig Simon graduated from UCLA in 1974.  He joined Berger Kahn as a law clerk in 1975, and finished law school at Loyola (and passed the Bar) in 1977.  Craig became a Berger Kahn partner in 1981, and in 1984 opened the firm’s Orange County office.  He served with steadfast loyalty to one firm his entire legal career, becoming the managing partner of all Berger Kahn offices.  Craig helped to build Berger Kahn’s insurance practice in the 1980s, and ultimately built the firm’s subrogation arm into a nationally recognized powerhouse. During the Woolsey Fire litigation, he was endowed the title “Subro King” by the court. It stuck.

Craig brought his unflagging energy with him to every court appearance. His mental sharpness was legendary. Craig just figured things out faster than others.  As a litigator, he was usually three or four steps ahead of his opposition, often referring to it as 3D chess.

Craig was a devoted husband and father.  His marriage to Joan was everlasting, spanning nearly five decades.  With Joanie’s help, he raised three wonderful and successful children, Rebecca, Hannah, and David, and he leaves behind three beautiful grandchildren.

Craig’s accomplishments as an attorney were many.  For example, he was recognized by the Daily Journal as a Top 100 California attorney.  He was often listed as a Best Lawyer in America, a Top 100 Southern California Super Lawyer, and a Top 50 Orange County Lawyer.  Craig was instrumental in leading the insurance industry to several billion-dollar wildfire subrogation settlements.

Craig trained multiple generations of attorneys. Leading by example, he taught more than the law, including the value of hard work and strict adherence to the highest ethical standards. His favorite motto was, “work hard, play hard”.

Craig was a born entertainer, who would have had a great career in Hollywood had he pursued it. He could tell a story like no other, with captivating and humorous gestures, accents, and dramatic effect. His personality and humor were infectious, and he truly lit up every room, be it a party, a dinner, or in Court.

We lost Craig on August 10, 2024, suddenly and unexpectedly.  The loss is enormous.  His legacy will be enduring.
